⊙ Quick answer

How do I know if grading my Hot Wheels will profit?

Run the break-even formula: (Predicted graded resale × 0.87 eBay net) minus (slab fee + round-trip shipping) must exceed (raw eBay comp × 0.87 × 1.20 opportunity-cost adjustment). If yes, submit. If no, sell raw. BlisterEye's free pre-grade returns the predicted grade and predicted graded resale in 10 seconds — the verdict (SEND / MAYBE / HOLD / SKIP) follows automatically.

Grading is a financial decision, not a sentimental one. The break-even formula has five inputs and one verdict. Most collectors don't run it explicitly — they guess. That's how a $30 slab fee turns into a $10 net loss on a card that should have been sold raw. This page is the formula, the worked examples, and the heuristic short-cut by casting type.

The break-even formula — plain English

(Predicted graded resale × 0.87 eBay net) − (Slab fee + round-trip shipping) ≥ (Raw eBay comp × 0.87 × 1.20 opportunity-cost adjustment). If left side ≥ right side, submission profits. If left < right, sell raw.

Worked example — Super Treasure Hunt at AFA 90

Raw comp: $80. Predicted AFA 90 resale: $250. Slab fee: $30. Shipping: $15. Net graded: ($250 × 0.87) − $45 = $172.50. Net raw with opp-cost adjustment: $80 × 0.87 × 1.20 = $83.52. Margin: +$88.98. Verdict: SEND.

Worked example — mainline at AFA 85

Raw comp: $8. Predicted AFA 85 resale: $35. Slab fee: $30. Shipping: $15. Net graded: ($35 × 0.87) − $45 = −$14.55. Net raw with opp-cost adjustment: $8 × 0.87 × 1.20 = $8.35. Margin: −$22.90. Verdict: SKIP.

Break-even by casting type — quick reference

Heuristic minimum AFA grade to break even, by casting category:

  • Super Treasure Hunt: AFA 75 or 80 (almost always profitable)
  • Regular Treasure Hunt: AFA 85 (gate every submission with pre-grading)
  • RLC online exclusive: AFA 80 to 85 (depends on production run)
  • Vintage Redline (rare): AFA 70 (the scarcity carries the comp)
  • Vintage Redline (common): AFA 80 to 85
  • Documented factory error: AFA 75 (authentication is half the value)
  • Common mainline: AFA 90 (and even then, marginal)

Why opportunity cost is in the formula

Submitting a card ties up capital for 3-8 weeks. That capital could be deployed on another flip, another casting, or another asset class. The 1.20× adjustment on raw resale represents the 20% IRR you'd expect from the next-best use of the money — it's why a 'just barely positive' graded margin isn't actually positive.
